Translating documents for US, UK and Canada visa applications

Immigration authorities in English-speaking countries require a full English translation of every document not written in English, and each country has its own rules.

United Kingdom

UK Visas and Immigration asks for a full translation that includes: the translator's confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original, the date of the translation, the translator's full name and signature, and the translator's contact details. The original document is submitted together with its translation.

United States

US immigration authorities require a complete English translation, accompanied by the translator's certification that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate. For US-bound files, I attach a certificate of translation accuracy in the format used there.

Canada

Canadian immigration authorities accept translations into English or French. When the translator is not a member of a Canadian professional translators' body, an affidavit sworn by the translator and a certified copy of the original may be required. Check the document checklist for your application.

Documents usually translated

• Birth certificate and family booklet
• Marriage contract or divorce deed
• Criminal record extract
• Employment and salary certificates, bank statements
• Diplomas and transcripts
• Property and business documents

Tip: make sure names are spelled exactly as in your passport, and send all documents at once so the spelling is consistent across every translation.

What about the apostille?

Tourist visa applications usually do not require an apostille. Residence, immigration or study files may require one, depending on the country. Check the country's requirements, or read the apostille guide.
